30 Oct 2023 - 10:30 to 11:10Knowledge vs skills: what students should really learn

There has been a long-running pedagogical debate over the benefits of a skills-based educational approach, as opposed to a knowledge-based education. With the huge development in technology, it is increasingly hard to predict the future of employment. But is a transversal – skills-based – education enough to help our students navigate the world beyond school? What role does knowledge play in a society where everyone has access to the internet and can google whatever they want? Is there a ubiquity of information and scarcity of knowledge.? This panel session will explore how we as educators and parents can empower and support students to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to manage the unpredictability and uncertainties of their future.

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality have become common words while using social media every day in terms of filters. However, when AR comes in combination with education, it enhances interactivity, visualisation of a concept. Earlier, books were the only source of information, then came video tutorials however with AR the concepts can be easily brought into the actual world, which simplifies the learning process. For example, while learning about the digestive system, if we read text from a book and quickly scan it to see what a 3D digestive system looks like with a pop-up text explaining its function, we can see and learn at the same time. Apart from that the ability to add voice in AR apps, helps students hear the information, this can particularly help with special students to learn at their own convenience.

30 Oct 2023 - 12:30 to 13:30The dichotomy in reconciling best early years practice with the demands of legislators.

Teaching in the early years is more difficult now than at any other time as educators strive to balance best practice initiatives with the requirement from legislators to be more accountable. Early years educators endeavour to develop best innovative practices that nurture children’s holistic development. However, they are also having to contend with greater scrutiny and accountability from legislators to provide data that reports children’s progress leading to more measurable teaching practices. The dichotomy between approaches is leading to many in the early years questioning how they can reconcile their beliefs about what early education should be with the requirements to produce paperwork and evidence to meet the demands of increased reporting. This session discusses the conflict experienced between making organic progress to best early years practice against meeting the demands of legislators.

30 Oct 2023 - 12:35 to 13:20Beyond Sustainability - from immersive education to living buildings

The topic of sustainable future is certainly one of the leitmotifs not only in education, but in every area of our life. However, the issues of the future of the educational environment, including the school building as such, go beyond sustainability as it is usually understood. Within this panel, we propose to address the following questions and try to find answers by approaching urban planners and those engineering solutions that are already ahead of the future: •          The school building is rapidly becoming outdated; hybrid forms of education constantly demand varieties of different spaces; sustainability paradigm demands to address environment issues – thus we need to catch a glimpse of the future, what are the areas of further development? What solutions can we offer here in terms of engineering, technologies, design and architecture? •          What are the “futuristic” scenarios of a learning environment? Is it possible for a school building to become "immersive" or "alive"? Can it respond to a certain state of mind and body? or anticipate some type of activity? Is it possible for a school building to be responsive to the emotional needs of our teachers and students? Would schools accept such an offer from designers and engineers?  •          What can existing “futuristic” sustainable and regenerative schools offer to other schools? Any recipes for others to start doing something today? Within our panel three representatives of three incredible progressive schools are going to discuss some of the issues described with the representative of Arup company - a trend setter for future engineering solutions and urban planning. School is never just a building – it’s always a larger ecosystem, a community builder.

In this GESS keynote talk, we offer, after extensive research, an invitation to journey with us into the innovative frontiers of education, where conventional subjects are replaced by domains reflecting the realities of the future. This cutting-edge model transforms the educational landscape, aligning it with the dynamism of the 21st-century world and empowering students with the multifaceted skills they need to flourish in rapidly evolving fields.  We are moving beyond words.  The escalating pace of global change has exposed the inadequacies of traditional educational paradigms. To address this, we've developed a skills-first model that integrates vital Emotional Intelligence (EQ) skills with revolutionary curriculum themes, all underpinned by the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL). We've identified four key future domains - Genomics, Artificial Intelligence, Digital Systems, and Environmental Systems - representing the vanguard of scientific and technological progress, crucial for tackling global challenges and catalysing change.  My talk will explore how we infuse a broad spectrum of EQ skills, ranging from creativity and critical thinking to empathy and global citizenship, into these futuristic domains. The integration of UDL principles ensures our model caters to diverse learning needs, promoting inclusive, adaptable, and effective teaching strategies.  In essence, we aim to shatter the traditional boundaries of education and pioneer an approach that readies our learners not just to adapt, but to thrive and lead in the emerging future. This journey requires a shared vision and commitment, and we invite you to join the THINK Learning Studio as we reshape the contours of the educational landscape.

30 Oct 2023 - 14:50 to 15:10Transcending Project-Based Learning: A Structured Approach to Interdisciplinary Education

In an era where Project-Based Learning (PBL) has become mainstream, in this talk, I propose an idea to explore the evolution beyond this framework, focusing on the innovative implementation of 'Solution Based Learning' (SBL). This methodology, deeply rooted in the extensive research and practical experience accumulated by THINK Global School (TGS) and the THINK Learning Studio, aims to provide a more comprehensive and integrated approach to interdisciplinary learning. Our proposal revolves around insights drawn from over 1,500 executed projects, illuminating the intricacies of assessment, project portfolio construction, and transcript creation. The crux of my presentation will be the unveiling of TGS’s unique SBL model. It aligns curriculum design with real-world problem-solving skills, seamlessly integrating multiple disciplines into each student's learning experience. The benefits are two-fold: enriched student comprehension across academic fields, and a tangible demonstration of their mastery via a diversified project portfolio. We'll also delve into the innovative assessment methodologies that ensure each student's understanding and aptitude are accurately represented. By shedding light on these elements, we aim to inspire a shift towards Solution Based Learning, paving the way for a true shift in the future of education.

30 Oct 2023 - 15:00 to 15:20Understanding and Responding to Behaviours that Challenge

The children who need love the most will always ask for it in the most unloving ways” We are social animals, for us it is all about relationships. For some of the children we support, who may be neurodivergent, certain relationships can be overwhelming and certain situations can trigger significant responses. These children may need to seek the security of control as they navigate a neurotypical world. We all seek control of our environments and relationships in different ways at different times, using various methods of communication through our behaviour. At times the communication shared in relationships can be misunderstood. As adults, we can interpret these behaviours as simply being ‘challenging’. As professionals that support children whose communication is often misinterpreted, we should look towards the possible functions of these behaviours to decipher the intended communication, and in doing so respond appropriately. Through relationships, behaviours can change.

30 Oct 2023 - 16:30 to 17:00How Mantra Vibrations impact the Three levels of the Brain and the Four levels of the Mind

How Mantra Vibrations impact the Three levels of the Brain and the Four levels of the Mind, altering behavioural patterns and emotional upheaval. According to contemporary physics, everything in the universe is made up of various degrees of energy vibrations. Anywhere there is a vibration, there will inevitably be sound. That implies that everything in existence is a kind of sound or a sophisticated combination of sounds or mantras. A continuous, repetitive, rhythmic movement pattern is called a vibration. It is the fundamental emission where matter originates. All vibrations take the form of waves that oscillate at a certain frequency per unit of time. Repeatedly chanting a mantra causes tuning to a certain frequency, which then makes contact with cosmic energy and draws it into the body and surrounds. As a result, it promotes brain health by bringing the energies into balance and raising the amount of one particular kind of energy.

31 Oct 2023 - 10:30 to 10:50Future-Proofing Pathways

In today's world, where knowledge and information are readily accessible to all, it is becoming increasingly important to empower students to be the cartographer of their own pathways and pursue the lives they truly desire. The traditional approach of directing students towards predetermined career paths with standardised assessment methods is rapidly losing relevance. The focus needs to switch from asking children 'what they want to be' towards 'who they want to be' , the programmes I have been designing over the last number of years seek to address exactly this.   A core curriculum of study to equip students with a diverse range of skills and abilities, enabling them to develop character and navigate their own unique journeys. Embracing a blended learning approach, combining essential skills teaching with independent learning opportunities. By placing the student at the centre of their own learning process, this Core Curriculum fosters a transformative journey of self-discovery, and self - realisation helping young adults end up exactly where they aught to be.  Students at Cranleigh who complete all the elements of the Core Curriculum not only gain additional accredited qualifications but also develop vital attributes such as critical thinking, adaptability, collaboration, confidence and tenacity. These skills are crucial for success and thriving in the modern world. The programme goes beyond conventional academic learning, nurturing confident, resilient, and mindful global citizens who are ready to shape the future according to their own aspirations.

31 Oct 2023 - 11:10 to 11:30Sustainability in Schools – A Collaborative Systems Change Approach

This session will answer the following questions: what does sustainability in schools look like, and how can we work together to catalyse systems change whilst engaging students to advocate for sustainable alternatives? 90% of a school’s environmental impact comes from four areas – transport, buildings, food, and uniforms. Making these sustainable requires a problem-solving approach at the systems level. Schools can have a significant influence and are much more likely to achieve change in these areas by working together rather than by acting individually. As an agent of change, The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS) harnesses the collective influence of its members, engages with their students, and partners with innovative organisations in their local communities to catalyse systems change in five focus areas – school food, school buses, school uniforms, school buildings and education for sustainability.

The main goal of action research is to improve the quality of practice; it can promote evidence-based decision-making about curriculum, instruction, and assessment and inform policy and practice.  It is a form of research that is designed to promote change and improvement within a specific context or organisation. I will briefly explain two approaches that schools can use to stimulate and guide action research in their schools. Both are grounded in reflective practice, will support professional growth and empower teachers to drive change in policy and practice. The first follows a ‘Do-Think-Do’ process and the second a ‘Think-do-Think’ process.

31 Oct 2023 - 14:20 to 14:40Relationships, Crises and Responses in Your School

Wouldn’t it be better if we could “not escalate” more situations? Consistent use of non-escalation skills in school nurtures relationships and establishes a robust Social Contract. Inevitably though, your teams will meet pupils and parents (and possibly other colleagues) who don’t want to follow the rules. At these moments, your people need skills in gathering those people back into a supportive atmosphere, where collaboration and cooperation are more likely and the social contract is rebuilt and strengthened. At times, your staff will meet children or young people in crisis at your school. They may be so upset and angry that they are self-injuring or directing violence at others - staff or students. This talk will give your team a direction of travel for being more prepared to face such moments with sensitivity and professionalism - but most of all, with a plan for teamwork when a crisis hits.

1 Nov 2023 - 11:30 to 11:50Enrichment and Equity - Re-inventing Giftedness

Gifted and talented is a term that can be retired. So how are we replacing it? High ability? More able? We can go beyond a shift in nomenclature. The high-end challenge for all is key. This will be an exploration of Renzulli, Gagne and Borland as leaders in the gifted field who have turned the definitions upside down. We will evaluate powerful strategies to stretch and challenge all students through inclusive models of enrichment and extension. Programmes for ‘gifted’ students can be elitist, exclusive, and antiquated. Identifying students is problematic. These are valid criticisms, so let's use new tools to identify, target, and extend our students' abilities.

1 Nov 2023 - 11:40 to 12:00Sustainable storytelling and social media in schools

As a social media marketing expert and MENA Social Media Manager of the Year 2023 (Stevie Awards) for the Arbor School, I have observed first-hand how important it is for educational institutions to use social media platforms to build their brand, connect with their community, and reach new audiences. As someone who values both the power of storytelling and the importance of sustainability, I believe that sustainable storytelling is a crucial aspect of marketing in schools and refers to the practice of telling stories that not only entertain and educate but also promote sustainable values and practices. During this presentation, I will cover the following topics: • The importance of authenticity in social media marketing • Sustainable Storytelling • How to create a purpose-driven social media strategy • Examples of successful social media campaigns that used authenticity and purpose • Best practices for measuring and analysing your social media success

1 Nov 2023 - 12:00 to 12:20Empowering Tomorrow's Innovators: The Impact of Design-Based Project Learning

In this session, I'm going to introduce the participants to the Design-based project learning model and why it should be leveraged for technology education. The term project-based learning (PBL) is often used vaguely to describe learning by doing. In design-based project learning, we combine various modern pedagogical approaches with PBL to create optimal learning opportunities for promoting valuable future skills and to motivate the learners. To make an 'ordinary' project into a design-based project, we can apply a design process, where students design something for others to enjoy. Doing this adds a motivating, meaningful layer to PBL. “Let’s create value for others together”. That really is what drives learners to achieve more than the minimum while also making them feel happy and needed. In addition to presenting the principles of Design-based project learning, I will introduce a few practical applications from elementary classrooms.

To support students transitioning effectively into the rapidly changing 21st century workplace, educators must provide opportunities for students to apply, contextualise and situate knowledge. Authentic experiential learning, exposing students to collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork and technology utilization, allows for exploration, learning from errors, and fostersr  adaptability, resilience, and creative problem-solving abilities.  Extending experiential learning beyond the classroom into real-world settings through work-based learning, apprenticeships, or professional placements further develops the skills and attributes students need to transition successfully into employment.

Walk into our school and you will not see a traditional early year’s classroom. We have created a unique learning environment for our population of Emirati students with classrooms full of awe and wonder that ignite their curiosity. Our philosophy is underpinned by the Walker Learning Approach, and we have developed small learning centres where students are able to access their own learning and pathways. Our children have access to a variety of centres relating to real-life experiences, curriculum input, and creative opportunities. They learn to play and communicate together as they explore a variety of roles. In this presentation we will share with you how to develop an authentic and intention play-based learning environment.

1 Nov 2023 - 12:35 to 12:55The Artificial (but Solvable) Discontinuity between Secondary and Tertiary

Just over a decade ago, a censorious book was published, claiming that the majority of students in American universities were not improving in their skills of critical thinking and writing as a result of their university education (Arum & Roksa, 2010). This text provided ammunition on behalf of the many critics of higher education, in particular the institutional constructs that permitted often comical but limited examples of academic freedom, excessive intellectualism from the liberal arts, and politically driven scholarship and teaching. It offered data to support the common assertion among employers, increasingly up to that point, that significant and troubling skill deficiencies existed among many university graduates. While many employer complaints were fully unfair--as employers have frequently passed the responsibility of on-the-job training to universities--this attitude had permeated the culture, often as a result of well-known entrepreneurs bragging that they had been successful without a university degree (e.g., Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg). Since that time, higher education has become much more adept at presenting itself as job-focused, amenable to lifelong learning. Universities talk about micro-credentials that allow for flexible delivery of timely skills. They boast about the employment rates of graduates.   They hesitate but still steadily adopt and adapt to technologies. In short, institutions of higher education are responding to the global critique that ivory tower institutional behaviours do not fit with fast-changing labour markets. But the core delivery mechanisms, including the institutions of academia (i.e. the disciplines), have not changed much. The term “institution” in this sense refers to the social constructs of a profession or system, in this case, academic faculty, who largely control the terms of delivery within universities and colleges. Compared to quickly adapting secondary curricula, which have over the past decade become more focused on generalizable skills and cross-disciplinary functions, such as the International Baccalaureate and the slow but steady movement away from rote memorization in Advanced Placement (American) and A-Level (British), higher education is still burdened by deep hierarchies that reinforce traditional modes of educational delivery. In a sense, the abrupt transition marker from secondary to tertiary education is a reminder that the social institutional constructs of school education and university education are in different spheres. This division does not need to persist. In my talk, I will briefly explore why this division exists and what both secondary and tertiary institutions (as well as regulators) can do to ensure that the generalizable skill gains from secondary curricula continue into tertiary institutions.

1 Nov 2023 - 14:45 to 15:05So…What Does An Outstanding Teacher Do?

What distinguishes an Outstanding Teacher? A question asked in numerous interviews - and one that's much easier to ask than to answer. Many teachers will admit they don’t actually know what ‘Outstanding’ looks like. It's not about creating jazz hands lessons for a one-off observation, through 'prepping, stressing and box-ticking'. It isn’t something that can be achieved in a single lesson. It is a craft that needs developing like any other skill. Influenced by John Hattie's Visible Learning research, So…What does an Outstanding Teacher Do? provides practical guidance and opportunities for self-reflection for teachers who want to maximise their positive impact on students’ learning. Whether you are a PGCE Student, an ECT or a practising teacher, this is an accessible guide for any teacher who aspires to maximise their positive impact and become truly outstanding.

1 Nov 2023 - 15:05 to 15:25The Impact of Career Guidance for Career Readiness with Secondary Students in the United Arab Emirates

Career readiness is about helping young people gain awareness of self, knowledge of the requirements for work, and the skills to reason for oneself to make career choices for their future. The efforts to help people identify with careers have been traced back to the fifteenth century. However, the responsibilities for career guidance and career readiness for adolescents are an ongoing debate between educators and policymakers. The assumptions about career readiness are that the responsibility lies in the hands of secondary education institutions and that young people are appropriately guided, making them career ready. However, factors such as accountability, curriculum constraints, and the skills gap contribute to young people's ongoing challenges, leaving them vulnerable, and unemployed. This talk will share my study that explored the assumptions, the bias, the expectations, and the multiple perspectives within the community of expatriate students impacted career guidance.
