#homeschooling: food and play to win the day

EDX Education Child Learning

Classrooms are closed and parents and caregivers have been thrown into the daunting world of homeschooling. Many feel overwhelmed as reports come in of inconsistent support from schools who are struggling to provide lesson plans to parents and caregivers at such short notice. But this is a time for families to connect and build communities and support networks.

Life as we know it has changed beyond recognition since COVID-19 unleashed itself upon us, with lockdown measures across the UAE and other countries in an effort to contain its spread. So parents need a way to work from home, keep the kids happy and to keep up with the school curriculum.

Homeschooling shouldn’t become boring. Research shows that children need to explore and experiment by ‘learning through play’. From a young age, children’s minds are curious especially in these early years and independent play sparks their imagination, develops their speech and language along with many more key development areas as shown in the diagram, below. And while working from home, parents need to find ways to keep the children playing.

Edx Education, working alongside Annabel Karmel, the UK-based, globally-renowned food expert, have devised a number of educational toys which will feature on ‘brain boosting’ meals which can be found on Annabel Karmel’s recipe cards.

Both Annabel Karmel and Edx Education have seen the benefits of encouraging play and healthy eating; their partnership brings to life Edx Education’s ‘Learning through Play’ philosophy with a selection of exclusive ‘Brain Boosting Recipes’.

Drawing on her 28 years of recipe expertise, Annabel has cooked-up delicious brain boosting recipe cards for under-fives to fuel their learning and development and most importantly, play.

There is access to a host of recipes, play activities, articles and competitions on their respective social media channels, all focussed on ‘brain boosting’ foods and learning through play on the Annabel Karmel hub page.

Annabel Karmel, founder of Karmel Foods, said “Edx Education share my vision to ensure children stay fuelled on the right foods to support them in these all-important early years. Their philosophy of ‘Learning through Play’ is such a fantastic approach and together we hope that my brain boosting recipes will inspire parents to encourage interactive play and healthy eating at home.”

Murray Jackson, CEO of Edx Education said, “this collaboration is aimed at advocating the importance of learning through play and healthy eating to parents, teachers and guardians as well as fostering creativity in their first 5 years when the brain is in its early development stages. We want to help children play and parents cope with home-schooling over the coming months and we look forward to providing brain boosting recipes, articles for parents to play and learn together with their families.”
