Language: The Key to Culturally Responsive Teaching & Equity in Transnational Education

Session Summary:

In this session, Stephanie explores how language can either open the door to meaningful education—or quietly lock students out. Drawing on her recently published research on transnational education and culturally responsive teaching in the MENA region, as well as her lived experience as an expatriate educator in the UAE, Stephanie unpacks the growing equity gaps in Transnational Education (TNE), where curriculum design often privileges Western norms and English-dominant instruction.

Through the lens of Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and the “funds of knowledge” framework, she invites educators and academic leaders to reflect on the hidden cultural and linguistic biases shaping their pedagogy and classroom practices. Stephanie shares practical, research-backed strategies for designing learning experiences that value student diversity, dismantle linguistic barriers and move TNE forward into a more inclusive, culturally aware 21st-century model of education.

This keynote will leave educators and leaders with meaningful reflections not only what they teach—but how, for whom, and why, and arm them with practical CRT strategies to use with staff and students.
