Practical Application of Schema Theory in Language Learning
Session Summary:
This presentation focuses on how to improve students' English through practical application of schema theory. It explores the theory as a powerful tool for cognitive and conceptual development, particularly for enhancing English language and literacy learning from K to 12 across the Middle East and Gulf region. Emphasis will be on how learners utilize existing knowledge structures to comprehend and integrate new information. In this session, I will showcase concrete strategies and techniques for teachers to leverage this cognitive process in the classroom and help them gain insights into designing schema-activating activities, that promote better classroom engagement. Through practical examples and classroom-tested techniques, I will provide educators with actionable strategies to unlock learners' full potential and facilitate significant advancements in areas of vocabulary acquisition, reading and writing skills as well as opportunities for oral exchange among students.
