Sharon McGlinchey

Subject Leader of Psychology

For the past seven years I have been Subject Leader of Psychology at Jumeriah English Speaking School, Dubai.  My first main role is to lead and manage a department of two staff and one hundred and forty one students across GCSE and IB Psychology.  Having taught Psychology for 12 years, beginning in the UK, I can honestly say I Iove and respect my subject more and more each year.  Teaching the subject to students, who in turn love to learn about themselves and the people around them is very rewarding and inspiring.  I also teach Theory of Knowledge, Social Studies and play a very active role as Year 10 Tutor.  Apart from the usual roles a teacher and head of department must follow, I have over the years embraced opportunities to bring Psychology to life outside of the classroom.  This allows students to not only understand Psychology in an applied and practical sense, but has also allowed them to develop skills in collaboration, leadership and creativity to name but a few.  Some extracurricular examples of what I have done over the years include, bespoke school trips to many different European countries including Germany, Austria and Poland.  A week long whole school project to raise awareness and money for World Mental Health Day.   Psychology Society projects including the creation of a DVD for to teach children with high functioning Autism social skills.  More recently, the current Head of the Psychology Society and I created a Virtual Reality 360-degree film focusing on improving mental health.   In particular its goal is to increase empathy and resilience around anxious thoughts experienced in some student during examination time.  This is still an ongoing project and has been a very contemporary and interesting one.
