Robert Widger

Director of LEGO Learning

Rob has over 20 years of experience in Education including teacher, training and product development. Currently Rob is the Director of LEGO Learning at his new school as well as teaching Robotics to Grades 9 and 10. Previous to teaching at the school Rob worked at ATLAB as their Head of Training and STEM Academy. He developed a teacher trainer programme across the GCC for Robotics as well as managing the ATLAB STEM Academy Programme supporting a team of 14 teachers. Previously he spent 10 years with LEGO Education as a Master Trainer in their Academy where he supported Ministries, LEGO Partners, teachers and students from around the world with his experience of implementing LEGO Education products into the classroom. He was also involved heavily in developing the MINDSTORMS EV3 face to face training material and well creating eLearning material for EV3. Before LEGO Education he was an ICT consultant for a local authority in the UK but started his career as an elementary teacher where he regularly used LEGO products in with his students. Rob is currently a LEGO Education Certified Trainer as well as being a Master Trainer for Tetrix Robotics.

How can we bring the STEAM alive in a relevant and interesting way? The new kit from LEGO Education, Spike, enables students to quickly design and build real world solutions. Design a solution that allows students to build a robot and program it to collect data from a website or can you build a robot arm to pick up objects and move them around. Rob demos how easy it is to use the hardware and program the robot to carry out the commands given to it. Pick up tips on classroom management as well as how to integrate Robotics into the curriculum.

Coding for some of us can be a daunting task but delivering a strong hands-on approach for this subject gives students a greater chance to develop into confident and competent coders. In this presentation Rob will take you through a journey of using LEGO to teach coding, robotics and those important 21st century skills starting in Kindergarten through to the end of Secondary.
