I am an EYFS Practitioner and consultant trainer for Ruth Miskin Literacy, one of the UK's leading authorities on teaching reading. Having recently relocated to Dubai, I am keen to share practical advice and the latest guidelines from the UK with delegates. I believe passionately that all children should be taught to read and be inspired to continue. When headteachers put reading at the heart of their school they change everything. Their children learn to read quickly, get the reading habit early, learn to love reading and are successful at school.
26 February 2020 | 16:30 - 17:00 | Phonics and Early Reading
A presentation given to UK schools in conjunction with the UK's Department for Education. Guidance and practical advice on how the best UK schools teach phonics and early reading. Ideal for senior leaders, classroom practitioners and SENCO's. 'Pupils need to develop the skill of blending the sounds into words for reading and establish the habit of applying this skill whenever they encounter new words. This will be supported by practice in reading books consistent with their developing phonic knowledge and skill and their knowledge of common exception words. At the same time, they will need to hear, share and discuss a wide range of high-quality books to develop a love of reading and broaden their vocabulary.' British National Curriculum 2014.
