Immersive Technology Stage

Immersive Technology Stage

Augmented and virtual reality are rapidly transforming the way that students interact with multimedia content in classrooms across the globe. At GESS 2020 we are delighted to include a dedicated space to showcase immersive technology and host a range of expert speakers, both local and international, to share best practice in the use of AR and VR for learning.

10:30 - 11:00Can you really learn in virtual reality?

Can you learn in virtual reality? What kind of skills you can learn in virtual environments and what skills must be learned in physical spaces? How can you get the biggest impact on learning with the help of VR? At the University of Eastern Finland, Savonlinna Teacher Training School, we were doing research for two years to answer these questions. We found out that there are three key elements in the use of VR in education to have a positive impact on learning: immersion, content creation, and collaboration. In this keynote, I will share what we learned and how you can successfully integrate VR into learning.

11:00 - 11:30Transitions and Modelling: Helping Students of Determination along the Road to Independence

One of the things we take for granted is our transition into activities, places, roles, and settings throughout the day. Wherever we are, transitions happen - most often naturally - as we move from one activity to another through the course of a day. However, transitioning is not smooth for everyone. For many each and every transition is perceived as a major experience. There are Students of Determination that need help with this process. At our school, GEMS Modern Academy, we use VR to help these students with their transitions. Using VR trips, virtual visitations and immersive environments we have been able to make transitions more manageable. We have also been able to add more value as we incorporate life skills as well. We are very pleased with the progress being made through these innovative interventions for our students on their road to independence.

15:00 - 15:30Unlocking the Potential Power of Knowledge

In today's world of rapid and endless change, the ability to absorb information rapidly and solve problems has become paramount towards success and fulfilment in life. This ability comes from a strong educational foundation and thinking framework. But, it’s more than just receiving information. It’s knowing how to use it in our daily life beyond school. The challenge today is that students are given information that is mandated by a certain curriculum and asked to use this information to prepare for tests. Although the information they are given is crucial, it is not organized into definite plans of action. How do we prepare the students of today for the world of tomorrow with the limitations of time and regulation? How do we ensure that they are pulled towards learning rather than being pushed? Compelling content and a well thought out rewards system can keep students engaged and their learning to be autonomous. To move beyond knowledge being potential power, into power.

10:30 - 11:00Immersive Learning bridging the gap between institutions and industries

Due to the advent in technology, the changing needs in various industries and the fact that there seems to be a disconnect in what institutions are grooming students with, industries have in turn suffered from inadequate skilled labour.  Meanwhile institutions are priding themselves in the number of graduates they churn out.   To this effect there are shortcomings in the academic system as they fail to equip their graduates with skills and readiness to adapt to the work environment and industries constant changing demands.  Immersive learning offers lower cost and cuts down the time required to teach the necessary knowledge in order to bridge the skill gap between the learning grounds and the market place.   It will address the gap between graduate’s ability and employers expectations of an organisation.

15:30 - 16:00The Future of Education is immersive- VR showcasing use in the curriculum

At Winchester School, this ground breaking virtual reality technology has been shown to increase student engagement, focus and increase knowledge retention for students of all ages. The interactive nature of virtual reality transforms students from passive learners into active learners, improving student motivation and their sense of control over their own learning. Virtual reality can help students learn abstract concepts because they can experience and visualize these concepts in the virtual environment. The immersive nature of virtual reality can help block out other distractions so the students can focus on the learning objectives. As hardware technology and computing power ramp up, the usage of VR will increase exponentially. Virtual reality offers not just better retention and comprehension of information but also the opportunity to create a framework for more equitable distribution of knowledge, with accessibility at scale.
