New landscapes for learning are on the rise. This talk focuses on three real-life examples of self-empowered, professional and social learners powered by technology. The cases range from tight-knitted self-directed learning groups to an online learning community for thousands of professionals. The first example is a self-organised learning group united by a common goal. The second covers a collaborative higher education course with success in creating a vibrant atmosphere and high participation level. The third example describes a large scale implementation creating a professional development community for ten thousand teachers and education staff. What unites these is that none of them would have been possible without social online solutions. While technology enables these communities new ways of interacting, it also creates novel challenges to overcome. The talk ends in describing how learning analytics was used to improve and support educators and learners in each of these cases.
