25 teachers attend week-long learning difficulties centre event

SHARJAH: The Sharjah Centre for Learning Difficulties in collaboration with Beacon College, Florida, USA, has started a week-long training workshop for teachers to obtain the most up to date practices in learning difficulties among students.

The workshop was held at the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce on Sunday. The launch was attended by Hanandi Al Suwaidi, director SCLD; Dale Harrods, Vice President Beacon College; Patrick Van Rooney, CEO GoGlobal; Paul Malek, US Counsel General in Dubai, and officials from the Sharjah City of Humanitarian Services.

As various surveys show, many students in the UAE are struggling with learning difficulties like dyslexia, ADHD and autism spectrum disorders. Workshops designed to address such issues with the help of experts will allow students to overcome learning difficulties and improve their overall academic performance.

Al Suwaidi stated while talking to The Gulf Today that they signed a partnership with Beacon College in March to organise training workshops for local teaching professionals.

“This week-long workshop is the first of the series under the SLDC partnership and in which around 25 teachers from various academic institutions are participating.”

The next workshop to address students with learning difficulties between the ages of 15-20 will be held in December as part of the same partnership with Beacon College.

The 35-hour training course has been accredited by Beacon College.

She pointed out that it is an essential training for teachers - providing them with the necessary tools to help students with learning difficulties.

The group of 25 teachers was nominated by the Ministry of Education and from different private institutions as well as from the SCLD.

Malek also addressed the workshop participants and lauded the cooperation of local partnership in the training for teachers.

Harrods address assured that the accredited trainers will be a great help for local resources in providing the latest techniques to their students.
